About the Author
Dr. Frederick Bailes (1889-1970) of Los Angeles, Calif. was among the most popular and important teachers of the Science of Mind. Dr. Bailes served with Science of Mind founder Ernest Holmes as Assistant Dean of the Science of Mind Institute in Los Angeles. He also headed the largest Science of Mind church of its day. In addition, Dr. Bailes was an accomplished metaphysical healer, having healed himself of a so-called incurable disease, using the very technique Treatment that he explains in these Lessons. The Science of Mind philosophy, says Dr. Frederick Bailes, is not a few psychological tricks; it is a life to be lived.

This book is one to read and study over a 12 week period as the author suggests. It contains 12 lessons in learning how to manifest things in one's life while becoming the person you want to be. A mind-blowing book!

A good basic Science of Mind text

Bailes was an early Church of Religious Science minister. This book is a well-written explanation of Science of Mind ideas, less a "tome" than Ernest Holmes "Science of Mind", which was the foundation work for lectures and meetings from which the church more or less evolved. Although Science of Mind writers tend more to argue for their ideas than to really "evangelize a faith", this work has the slightest flavor of an evangelical work. The reader should not worry that it is off-putting, however. It is readable and its ideas are easy to access. If you wish to understand new thought ideas and an argument for their practical application, this is a good place to start. You may not be a convert (I am not), but you can find a good bit to understand what these Californians were doing, and how it links up with the entire new thought movement.

Well written and fairly easy to grasp. Dr. Frederick Bailes covers this in bite size steps and the short quiz at the end of each chapter clarifies - if you don't quite understand all that he has written.

Highly recommended for students of Metaphysics!

In my opinion, Smerdon's Scandinavian is one of the best books on the Scandinavian Defence to have ever appeared in print. It's detailed, instructive, candid and, often, wildly funny. The Portugese Variation, which is the main subject of the book, is certainly very much alive and there's plenty of room for improvement and creativity on both sides in the sidelines that Smerdon gives. His book will remain the standard reference guide in this opening for a long time to come. (Arne Moll Chess.com)

About the Author
David Smerdon is a Grandmaster from Australia. He has represented his country at six chess Olympiads, and played board one for the Australian team at the 2012 and 2014 Olympiads. In 2009 he won the Oceania Zonal Championship and qualified for the World Cup. He's a regular contributor to the popular chess openings website ChessPublishing.com.

Best book on the 2...Nf6 Scandinavian.

I still need to study the whole of the book, but the variations are accurately analyzed. To be perfectly clear: the 2...Nf6 Scandinavian is less solid than the 2...Qxd5 Scandinavian and if White chooses the best line to play, then Black might suffer to finally get a draw (which to be honest happens in other openings too). But before that happens, a lot is still to be played for: often there occur variations that are good for White (according to several engines) but are so much easier to play for Black. So these 'good for White' variation might be 'hard to play correctly for White' and thus give Black a practical chance for everybody who is not a titled played or who is not playing a titled player. I wouldn't play it against GM's or even IM's. But all less gifted should better not show disrespect for this opening for Black, unless they have spend hours analyzing it. And nobody does that, just because everybody frowns upon the 2...Nf6 Scandinavian. I am sure in rapid play or Blitz, this line is a killer. And in amateur games it will do fine too.

but I sometimes get bored seeing the same positions and feel like I give ...

I try to play a version of the Scandinavian defense against e4 openings, but I sometimes get bored seeing the same positions and feel like I give up too many tempi with my queen often under attack. Smerdon's version of the Scandinavian is just the cure for my problem with the opening. Smerdon looks at the opening as a true sacrifice of material in return for rapid development and some surprising tactical weapons against white that do not exist in the standard versions of the opening that I have seen. Smerdon's Scandinavian livens up the positions quite a bit and allows me to have a bit more fun, while still playing a solid position. Like the other reviewer, I am still sinking my teeth into the book. I even gave a copy of the book to a chess instructor I take lessons from (who taught me the opening) who is running the lines through a computer to see how sound they are. If I get additional information on his analysis, I will edit my review. Suffice to say that I look forward to learning these lines and playing them in the future. Look out white! Here comes a weapon from black that will make you think a bit.

A good book on an interesting opening

Opening books fall into different groups: Some give lots of games, others give lots of lines in a more dense format. David Smerdon combines the two. Each chapter in this book starts with some illustrative games with ample commentary to illustrate the ideas and then has a theory section.

Smerdon is a clear fan of this opening - he makes that clear and it doesn't detract from the book.

My only reservations are that there are a lot of oddball responses that are not covered; this will be more important to people rated under about 2000 ELO, whose opponents are likely to respond oddly and who are probably less able to come up with the refutation.

About the Author

CHRISTIE JOHN GEANKOPLIS is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

Preface

The title of this text has been changed from Transport Processes and Unit Operations to Transport Processes and Separation Process Principles (Includes Unit Operations). This was done because the term "unit operations" has been largely superseded by the term "separation processes," which better reflects the modern nomenclature being used.

In this fourth edition, the main objectives and the format of the third edition remain the same. The sections on momentum transfer have been greatly expanded, especially the sections on fluidized beds, flow meters, mixing, and non-Newtonian fluids. Material has been added to the chapters on mass transfer. The chapters on absorption, distillation, and liquid-liquid extraction have also been enlarged. More new material has been added to the sections on ion exchange and crystallization. The chapter on membrane separation processes has been greatly expanded, especially for gas-membrane theory.

The field of chemical engineering involved with physical and physical-chemical changes of inorganic and organic materials and, to some extent, biological materials is overlapping more and more with the other process-engineering fields of ceramic engineering, process metallurgy, agricultural food engineering, wastewater-treatment (civil) engineering, and bioengineering. The principles of momentum, heat, and mass transport and the separation processes are widely used in these processing fields.

The principles of momentum transfer and heat transfer have been taught to all engineers. The study of mass transfer has been limited primarily to chemical engineers. However, engineers in other fields have become more interested in mass transfer in gases, liquids, and solids.

Since chemical and other engineering students must study so many topics today, a more unified introduction to the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass transfer and to the applications of separation processes is provided. In this text the principles of the transport processes are covered first, and then the separation processes (unit operations). To accomplish this, the text is divided into two main parts.

This part, dealing with fundamental principles, includes the following chapters: 1. Introduction to Engineering Principles and Units; 2. Principles of Momentum Transfer and Overall Balances; 3. PART 2: Separation Process Principles (Includes Unit Operations)

This part, dealing with applications, covers the following separation processes: 8. Evaporation; 9. Drying of Process Materials; 10. Stage and Continuous Gas-Liquid Separation

Processes (humidification, absorption); 11. Vapor-Liquid Separation Processes (distillation); 12. Liquid-Liquid and Fluid-Solid Separation Processes (adsorption, ion exchange, extraction, leaching, crystallization); 13. Membrane Separation Processes (dialysis, gas separation, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, microfiltration); 14. Mechanical-Physical Separation Processes (filtration, settling, centrifugal separation, mechanical size reduction).

In Chapter 1 elementary principles of mathematical and graphical methods, laws of chemistry and physics, material balances, and heat balances are reviewed. Many readers, especially chemical engineers, may be familiar with most of these principles and may omit all or parts of this chapter.

A few topics, primarily those concerned with the processing of biological materials, may be omitted at the discretion of the reader or instructor; these include Sections 5.5, 6.4, 8.7, 9.11, and 9.12. Over 240 example or sample problems and over 550 homework problems on all topics are included in the text. Some of the homework problems involve biological systems, for those readers who are especially interested in that area.

This text may be used for a course of study following any of the following five suggested plans. In all plans, Chapter 1 may or may not be included.

1. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass and separation processes. In this plan, most of the entire text, covering the principles of the transport processes in Part 1 and the separation processes in Part 2, is covered. This plan would be applicable primarily to chemical engineering as well as to other process-engineering fields in a one-and-one-half-year course of study at the junior and/or senior level.

2. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass and selected separation processes. Only the elementary sections of Part 1 (the principles chapters—2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7) are covered, plus selected separation-processes topics in Part 2 applicable to a particular field, in a two-semester or three-quarter course. Students in environmental engineering, food process engineering, and process metallurgy could follow this plan.

3. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass. The purpose of this plan in a two-quarter or two-semester course is to obtain a basic understanding of the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass transfer. This involves studying sections of the principles chapters—2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 in Part 1—and omitting Part 2, the applied chapters on separation processes.

4. Study of separations processes. If the reader has had courses in the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass, Chapters 2-7 can be omitted and only the separation processes chapters in Part 2 studied in a one-semester or two-quarter course. This plan could be used by chemical and certain other engineers.

5. Study of mass transfer. For those such as chemical or mechanical engineers who have had momentum and heat transfer, or those who desire only a background in mass transfer in a one-quarter or one-semester course, Chapters 6, 7, and 10 would be covered. Chapters 9, 11, 12, and 13 might be covered optionally, depending on the needs of the reader.

Different schools and instructors differ on the use of computers in engineering courses. All of the equations and homework problems in this text can be solved by using ordinary hand-held computers. However, more complicated problems involving numerical integration, finite-difference calculations, steady- and unsteady-state two-dimensional diffusion and conduction, and so on, can easily be solved with a computer using spreadsheets. Almost all undergraduate students are proficient in their use.

The SI (Systeme International d'Unites) system of units has been adopted by the scientific community. Because of this, the SI system of units has been adopted in this text for use in the equations, example problems, and homework problems. However, the most important equations derived in the text are also given in a dual set of units, SI and English, when different. Many example and homework problems are also given using English units.

Good for separations techniques

The only review that I can give for the text would be for the separations sections, of which our class concentrated mainly on the distillation regime. Excellent structured pairing of chapter labeling with homework and example problems. Open-ended problems required a sufficient level of engineering skills.

Best Chemical Engineering Book I've Had

This book is by far the best and most thorough chemical engineering book we used at my university. Every chapter redefines variables it uses instead of you having to reference 8 chapters back to remember what a particular variable is. The book does a remarkable job of taking a very complicated subject and making it seem as easy as can it could possibly be. This book saved me in school and, as I said, is without a doubt the best text book we used during undergrad.

A fantastic start to this series

I read each of these individually as they were released.

Part 1:
A fantastic start to this series.
Thus part does a fantastic job of building the storyline & characters with the main characters trying to pull themselves out of a pit of self loathing and self judgement.
Ends on a bit if a cliffy but knowing Ali Parker we won't have long to wait for part 2.

Part 2:
Ali has managed to pack a lot into this little package.
Can Sicily get over her self judgement & paranoia. Can Drake help with her problems and remain hidden from his past?
I love how this story has progressed & can't wait for the concluding part of Judged.

Part 3:
I have loved reading Drake & Sicily's story. Ali Parker has smashed this series finale!!!
With love, encouragement, forgiveness & the right person you can get over your past.

Ive been given a copy of this by Hurricane Readers Book Reviews for an Honest Review. And Omg I loved this series!!! I really likes the whole story about Drake and Sicily. He has been in love with her since the first time he saw her but she never felt worthy of anyone's love because of her weight and her low self esteem. But Drake broke through her walls it wasn't easy though but he did and it wasn't an easy road. They had a few obstacles in there way but he kept showing her that there's nothing he wouldn't do for her. There love for each other helped them change each other for the better. Ali Parker never disappoints and this one is AMAZING!!!!!!

Judged was by far my favorite book in this series! If I had to pick just one to read out of this series it would be the one, but reading the other 2 books helps you get to know the characters better. I was excited to get to Sicily and Drake's story, which is book 3 in the series. Sicily is the quiet one in the group and has self image issues. Drake is a gym rat among other things.....You'll need to read to find out.

Todd Kettler, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology in the College of Education at the University of North Texas where he teaches courses in gifted education, creativity, and child development. In addition to his work as a teacher and researcher at the University of North Texas, he spent 17 years as an English teacher and gifted and talented program administrator.

A well-researched model for advanced academic programs.

As a high school teacher who works with gifted and advanced academic students, I have always been disturbed by the lack of curriculum (outside of AP courses) that is designed to meet the needs of these students. Dr. Kettler (along with the many other contributors) has laid out a plan here to respond to the needs of gifted and advanced academic students in a way that is low-impact to the school, easy to implement, and is backed by research. "Modern Curriculum" is thoroughly cross-referenced and contains discussion questions at the end of each chapter to facilitate further research and/or to use as its own curriculum to teach other teachers. It is divided into sections by subject and one needn't read all of the sections to understand how a program like this would be used in their particular subject area. I would highly recommend this book for anyone teaching an advanced academic course.

This book is a must have for all adherents of IFA and ORISA, and really to anyone interested. The book covers a most central topic/theme in our Traditions -- one which is more often than not misunderstood, both in the Diaspora and in Afrika. I really cannot recommend this book enough.

She pays particular attention to academically unprepared students, noting that the strategies she offers for this particular population are equally beneficial for all students.

While stressing that there are many ways to teach effectively, and that readers can be flexible in picking and choosing among the strategies she presents, Saundra McGuire offers the reader a step-by-step process for delivering the key messages of the book to students in as little as 50 minutes. "It shouldn’t be surprising that a volume intent on teaching students how to learn is just as intent on teaching the reader how to do just that, but it is still refreshing to read a book that lays out its goals, sticks to the promises it makes, and even creates its own study guide based on how much time the reader has to give to the text. Well-structured and clear, Saundra Yancy McGuire’s Teach Students How to Learn is as thoughtful about itself as it is about the content it presents. McGuire has composed this book to reflect her own response to and engagement with a pressing problem in higher education: namely, that many students, even those who qualify for admission at prestigious institutions, arrive without ever having been taught to learn by anything but rote memorization. Faced with college’s demands of skills higher in Bloom’s Taxonomy, they find themselves struggling and even failing.

With this book McGuire gives teachers the tools they need to move their students past the high school model of retention until regurgitation, helping them instead to internalize a more nuanced, flexible understanding of learning. To convey this understanding, McGuire focuses on student mindset, encouraging educators to bring in everything from neurobiological models to fellow student success stories in order to help learners see that they are not stuck being 'bad' at something – that change is not only possible, but already well within reach.

About the Author
Saundra Yancy McGuire has been teaching chemistry and working in the area of learning and teaching support for over forty years. In 2007, she was recognized for excellence in mentoring with a Presidential Award presented in a White House Oval Office Ceremony. She is an elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, and the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations. In 2013 she retired as assistant vice chancellor and professor of chemistry at Louisiana State University, and is now Director Emerita of the LSU Center for Academic Success, which was named the National College Learning Center Association outstanding learning center in 2004. Saundra has presented her widely acclaimed faculty development workshops at over 200 institutions in five countries. Saundra received her B.S. degree, magna cum laude, from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, her Master’s degree from Cornell University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she received the Chancellor’s Citation for Exceptional Professional Promise.

Thomas Angelo is Clinical Professor of Educational Innovation & Research, The Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education and Director of Educator Development, Eshelman School of Pharmacy, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Dr. Angelo is known for his efforts in the development of faculty, curriculum and academic planning. Dr. Angelo began teaching in the late 1970’s and since then has worked in various academic capacities at many U.S. institutions including, DePaul University, The University of Miami, Boston College, University of California-Berkeley and Harvard University. Besides teaching, Dr. Angelo has been involved in numerous research projects and seminars in classroom studies and assessment strategies. He founded the Academic Development Center at Boston College, the Institute for Teaching and Learning at the University of Akron, as well as the School for New Learning Assessment Center at DePaul University. While he served as the Founding Director of the Academic Development Center at Boston College, he co-authored Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers with K. Patricia Cross and later published a second edition in 1993. Dr. Angelo graduated from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education with a Doctorate in Education in 1987. He currently serves as the Pro Vice Chancellor of Curriculum and Academic Planning at Latrobe University, Australia and before that was the Director of the University Teaching Development Center at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Stephanie McGuire holds a bachelor's degree in biology from MIT, master's and doctoral degrees in neuroscience from the University of Oxford, and a master's degree in opera performance from the Longy Conservatory. She attended Oxford on a Marshall scholarship and a graduate fellowship from the National Science Foundation. At the Longy Conservatory, Stephanie received the Victor Rosenbaum medal, given yearly to the most outstanding graduate of the conservatory. Partly as a result of long and stimulating conversations with her mother about pedagogy and learning strategies, Stephanie has become a highly sought after private academic tutor in the New York City area. By co-authoring this book, she is delighted to contribute to Dr. Saundra McGuire's admirable and revolutionary mission to make all students expert learners. Since graduating from conservatory, Stephanie has enjoyed forging a successful career as a classical mezzo-soprano. She has performed with New York City Opera at Lincoln Center, with the Boston POPS Orchestra in Symphony Hall, and several times at Carnegie Hall.

This book is for everyone, the book is very user-friendly as it does not uses technical jargon. As a parent and professional the information is very useful even many years after graduating college. EVERYONE , should read this, students, teachers, parents, it really does work and the techniques here will help you help others around you.
