Suspenseful, Sexy, and Superb!

Being an avid reader, I eagerly downloaded and read A Shot of Red by Tracy March. Right from the start I fell in love with Mia's character and soon following I fell in love with that hottie Gio too! These two have an integrity and passion that we all want coming out of a powerful family in DC and together are on a mission to save a potentially tainted flu vaccine from killing millions of Americans.

Loved the storyline--it kept me glued and I couldn't wait to find out "who done it" and at the same time I was sad it was over!

Can't wait to read more from this author--keep them coming Tracy March!

A Thrilling Read

I read this romantic thriller from beginning to end in one day. Gripping the edge of my seat, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to read what would happen next.

Ms. March introduces relatable characters and situations that are suspenseful as well as touching and thought provoking. I loved the hot chemistry between Mia Moncure whose family owns a biotech company and Gio Lorenzo, communications director for her mother, senior Senator from Virginia.

I recommend A Shot of Red for anyone who enjoys a well written book. I look forward to reading other books by this excellent author.

Great mystery romance

The main character Mia is a very determined young woman set to possibly take over a multi million dollar pharmaceutical company. Her brother is also in line with her. She returns from a humanitarian trip to Haiti (which she also uses as an escape hatch) she finds out her former fiance has died, there is possibly something wrong with the flu vaccination just released, a possible flu epidemic, foul play and decides to tackle it all. This is where the sexy Gio helps her.

I really liked this book. The author Tracy did a fabulous job with the characters. They were realistic and easy to relate to. There was enough background information to make it interesting but not to much to overwhelm you. I couldn't put the book down wanting to know the outcome. I was shocked to say the least. If you are looking for a good mystery with romance this is a great book to try out.

Review: 'Will You Remember Me?' by Amanda Prowse

Poppy Day is a 32-year-old mother who is happily married to her husband Martin, who works in the army, and together they have two lovely children, Peg and Max. As a family, they have been through quite a lot and Poppy is incredibly happy to have Martin back home, safe and sound, for the time being. However, while Poppy is busy taking care of her kids and making sure Martin enjoys his time back at home, she forgets to take good care of herself and suddenly finds a lump growing on her breast. Their comfortable and familiar family life is suddenly turned upside down. Everyone knows that if there is one person strong enough to beat cancer it has to be Poppy, but what if the disease just doesn’t want to beaten?

The main character of this novel, Poppy, already appeared in Amanda Prowse’s ‘Poppy Day’, a book which I had not read before starting ‘Will You Remember Me?’. Even though I did occasionally wonder about things that had happened to the group of characters in the past, you can definitely read this book as a stand-alone. I have to warn you though, this story will break your heart, over and over again. Wow, I can’t remember the last time I read a book with so much emotion in it! I don’t easily cry while reading, but I have to admit I shed a few tears while getting through this novel. The emotions in it are so raw and realistic and I think every reader will be able to imagine themselves in a situation like the one Poppy and her family find themselves in and imagine how horrible it would be. The topic of the book actually hits quite close to home for me, which made it an even more intense read, especially since the authors deals with it in a beautiful but at the same time really honest and realistic way.

Amanda Prowse is an amazing author and she really touched me with her writing. There’s a simply wonderful cast of warm and easily loveable characters at the core of this book. Poppy and Martin make such an amazing couple and their two children, Peg and Maxy, are the cutest. While reading, I felt like a part of their little family and I don’t think anyone would be able to read this novel without caring for and warming to these characters. There were quite a few beautiful and really touching scenes in the book, and Amanda made it really easy to picture it all in my head and feel like I was standing there in the room with the characters. ‘Will You Remember Me?’ is a simply heartbreaking, well-written and incredibly emotional read; a book I definitely recommend, but make sure you have a box of tissues ready when you start!

An exceptionally moving novel

Poppy Day is in her early thirties and leads an ordinary but blissful life with her two young children and her husband, former childhood sweetheart Mart. They're not rich people and don't have an awful lot of possessions, but they do have each other and that is all that matters to them. Poppy may have once dreamed of a kidney-shaped pool and a diamond ring as big as an ice cube, but in truth she loves her simple life and the only thing that could possibly make her even happier is the return of her husband, who is touring with the army. So when he does comes back earlier than expected it's like Christmas has arrived early for the Cricket family and they make the most of it as they are not sure when he will be deployed again.

However, their happiness is short-lived when Poppy out of the blue finds a lump in her breast. Fearing the worst but still holding out hope, she doesn't unnecessarily want to scare her family so Poppy sets out to the doctor by herself for a proper examination. Not long after that initial terrifying visit her worst nightmare is confirmed; she has cancer. She's quickly absorbed in the routine of regular hospital visits, chemotherapy and lots of medicine to ease the aches and pains that suddenly overtake her previously seemingly healthy body. She tries to stay strong for her family, but when Poppy thinks that things couldn't get any worse, they do and the one thing she was always so certain of, her marriage, suddenly doesn't seem quite so solid anymore.

Every once in a while a book manages to grab me in its clutches with such a gripping storyline that I find it near impossible to put it down to do other things (like work, eat and sleep) and that was definitely the case with this compelling story. I kept finding myself picking it up to steal a few lines here and there, which is not exactly an effective way of reading a novel, but at least it satisfied my cravings for a few minutes.

This isn't the first time author Amanda Prowse has written about Poppy Day and her family, however this was the first novel I'd read with her protagonist. So while technically this is a sequel, it can be read perfectly well as a stand-alone. There is not much of the characters' history required and that which is, is explained within the story so the reader doesn't get lost along the way. Having said that, I came to care greatly for Poppy and her family, so if you have the time I highly recommend that you do start with the first novel, titled Poppy Day, before moving on to Will You Remember Me?

I find it incredibly daring of Prowse to take a character from a previous novel that readers no doubt have become very attached to only to, to put it bluntly, kill her off in the sequel. This is something that perhaps happens in Hollywood movies but not so much in books. In that respect it's probably better I hadn't read Poppy Day, as I already found this an incredibly difficult novel to read emotionally and that would've only been worse had I known Poppy longer than the few days it took me to read this book in its entirety.

I loved the strong Poppy, her wonderful children and her handsome husband. They may indeed have a simple life, but they made it the most of what they had. This is why I felt outraged with a twist in the story towards the end of the novel. I don't want to go into detail as that may spoil the enjoyment for those who have not read it yet, but let's just say I was very close to throwing the book against the wall in frustration. I found this one part of the story absolutely unfathomable (both the choices of the characters involved and Poppy's eventual response it), which is why this novel has 4 stars instead of 5.

Admittedly, if I'd done my research and known that Will You Remember Me? would be a cancer novel I probably would have avoided it as it hits very close to home and at the moment I prefer to escape from reality in the books that I read. However, I am very glad that I did pick up this stunning novel, because while the story was harrowing and emotionally draining it was also exceptionally moving and reading it was very cathartic. Amanda Prowse was written a beautiful story of family and love, which happens to have cancer at the heart of the novel, not the other way around.

This is one of my favourite reads so far,a very powerful storyline about the life of Poppy Day and how she deals with her illness. This book had me on the edge of my seat and at times welling up with tears at the injustices of a terrible disease and how it affects the whole family. A must read for any lover of this great author

The Difference Between a Reporter and A Historian

The good news: an epic sweep through computing history connecting the dots as Isaacson's sees them. Even if you're not a technical history fan than this book will serve as the definitive history of computing through the first decade of the 21st century.

The bad news: this book will serve as the definitive history of computing through the first decade of the 21st century. It is at best technically wrong, misses some of the key threads in computing history and starts with a premise (that innovation comes from collaboration) and attempts to write history to fit.

The difference between and a reporter and a historian is that one does a superficial run-through of a rolodex of contacts and the other tries to find the truth. Unfortunately Isaacson's background as reporter for Time and CNN makes this "history" feel like he was comfortable going through his Rolodex of "Silicon Valley" sources connecting interviews, and calling it history.

I'm sure Isaacson would claim, "more details get in the way of a good story," however that is exactly the difference between a throwaway story on CNN and a well written history. The same epic sweep could have embraced and acknowledged the other threads that Isaacson discarded. The gold standard for a technical history is Richard Rhodes "The Making of the Atomic Bomb."
(Other reviewers have pointed out pointed several critical missing parts of computing history. I'll add one more. While perpetuating the "Intel invented the microprocessor" story makes great business press copy it's simply wrong. Intel commercialized something they knew someone else had already done. Lee Boysel at Four Phase invented the first microprocessor. If Isaacson had done his homework he would have found out that Bob Noyce was on the Four Phase board, knew about the chip and encouraged Intel to commercialize the concept.)

Finally, one of the "facts" in this book that differentiate reporting from history is the garbled bio of Donald Davies, one of the key inventors of Packet Switching. Davies is described as "during the war he worked at Birmingham University creating alloys for nuclear weapons tubes..." I started laughing when I read that sentence. It's clear Isaacson had no idea what Davies did in WWII. He obviously found a description of Davies' war work, didn't understand it and re-edited it into something accidently amusing - and revealing. What Davies had actually done during the war is worked on the British nuclear weapons program - codenamed "TubeAlloys".

Understanding the distinction is the difference between a reporter and a historian.

An epic, fast moving history with some flaws and omissions that can be corrected in a second edition or paperback epilogue

One of the greatest strengths of Walter Isaacson’s latest book is the author’s personal interviews with some of the post-Altair key players. A curious weakness noted by a few reviewers is that some of the earliest digital computers are absent from the text. A paragraph or two on the fascinating history of the ancient abacus would have been nice. While Isaacson is generally correct in observing that advances in computer technology have benefitted from or were made possible by collaborations, those advances often occurred as step functions and not gradual ramps.

A full review of this latest Isaacson book would require a book of its own. So I’ll zero in only on the Altair 8800 story. While the Altair’s Intel 8800 microprocessor was developed in Silicon Valley, Isaacson begins his account of the Altair by noting that the first commercially successful hobby computer was developed far away in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Altair was designed by Ed Roberts, who headed MITS, Inc. Isaacson captures only a hint of Ed’s personality during those heady days, and he emphasizes Ed’s hobbyist side more than his degree in electrical engineering. Ed was a first class designer of both analog and digital circuits, an ability most notably shared by Steve Wozniak.

Elsewhere in this tome Isaacson adds flavor and spice to the origins of the PC era with some captivating interviews with some of the key players. Unfortunately, Ed passed away in 2010 (Bill Gates visited him in the hospital), and was not around to be interviewed. Dave Bunnel and other MITS veterans could have added some great Ed stories and corrected a few flaws. For example, the Altair was not developed in The Enchanted Sandwich Shop, which I rented for $100 per month so we could move MITS from Ed’s garage to prepare the Opticom kits we sold through Popular Electronics. That was in 1970, long before the Altair. The Altair was named by Popular Electronics staffers Alexander Burawa and John McVeigh, not by Les Solomon’s daughter.

These errors are trivial (one of Ed's favorite words) in light of this book's vast reach and they don’t take away from the significance of this book, which could be the primary text for a university course on the history of modern computing. But since Ed’s Altair set the stage for much of the industry that followed, it would be good to have a flawless and somewhat more detailed account of the Altair’s origin. A number of other histories of the PC have similar errors. While a revised and corrected second edition would be best, perhaps the paperback version of Isaacson’s book can includes an epilogue with at least some mention of the missing computers noted here by other reviewers and more about Ed, MITS and the Altair story.

An ideal platform for an epilogue is the Startup Gallery of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque. Startup, which was conceived and largely financed by Paul Allen, presents the history of modern computing with many rare artifacts from Allen’s personal collection. The centerpiece is devoted to the development of the Altair, complete with video interviews with Ed Roberts and the other key players. A nearby multimedia presentation is must watching.

2015 will be the Altair’s 40th anniversary. If Isaacson can visit Startup and provide advance notice of his arrival, perhaps some of us MITS veterans can meet him there and give him a tour.

Excellent telling of the story of computing technology

Wonderful overview of the history of computing technology, blending the human stories with their industrial results. My suggestion to non-tech readers is that if you feel put off by the theoretical, early contributions of Countess Lovelace, give it a couple of chapters for the relevance to become apparent, or just fast forward a chapter to World War II, when the race is on between British and American computing efforts, spurred, in part, by horrific weapons and a cryptographic arms race with Germany. This book demonstrates well how the iPhone and the Internet are both side effects of the Cold War, as well as some pretty arrogant, greedy bastards and novel organizational concepts that grew into the ecology we call Silicon Valley, thanks in no small part to Professor Frederick Terman. Lots of taxpayer money was fairly well spent by the IT sector of the military industrial complex, enabling, among other things, our beloved Amazon. For those who enjoy broader history and science of the Cold War, I suggest, as complementary books: Martians of Science (Istvan Hargittai) and The Wise Men (Isaacson and Thomas).

A nice introductory text on system dynamics. The treatment of time-domain modeling and analysis is very good. Unfortunately, the treatment of the s-domain (laplace) approach is a little weak. Overall, good.

The 1920s and 1930s Books of Draftings already contain the foundation draftings necessary to make the garments and only require the Haslam Chart to complete (the separate Foundation Drafting Book is not necessary). Therefore, you only need (1) and (3) of the Haslam System components to make any of the garments in this book. **IMPORTANT:** If you have a Haslam Chart (similar to a dressmaking/tailor's square), you only need this book to create the patterns for the fashions shown. If you do not have a Haslam Chart, Bramcost Publications has published the Chart in a book titled "Haslam System of Dresscutting -- Vintage Pattern Making for 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s Fashions (Haslam Chart and Foundation Draftings)" that contains the other Haslam components needed to create the fashions. Using 14 body measurements, you first create your foundation pattern using the instructions at the beginning of the book and the Haslam Chart. More Than Just Dams and Salmon

At first glance, "Finding the River" seems to be about dams and salmon and an oddly specific river in the Pacific Northwest.

However, author Jeff Crane peels back the many layers surrounding the recent removal of the Elwah and Glines Canyon dams which have starved the river of its salmon for decades. Crane uses this topic as a jumping off point for a larger discussion involving the native Klallam Indian culture, the nature and evolution of environmental discourse in America, the role of state and federal government in environmentalism, and what the restoration of the Elwah river means in a larger context of a nationwide environmental movement. Each one of these topics, Crane handles with care and is very aware of the scholarship that came before him (I say this with in mind the first chapter over the Klallam Indians and his treatment of Richard White in his conclusion).

Through his meticulous and careful writing, Crane successfully infuses the topics of river restoration and environmentalism with subtlety and nuance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has read William Cronen's "Changes in the Land" or anyone who is interested in environmental history or ecology.

River of Meaning

This book offers a narrative of the Elwha, to most of us a little known river that runs through the Olympia National Park in Washington State, focusing on the battles that have been fought over the last one-hundred and fifty years to first harness its potential power and, more recently, to attempt to restore the river to its original purpose. The work is surprisingly timely, given that the author could not have known when he began the project that the two major dams on the Elwha would finally come down in 2011 after decades of struggle. But the story of how this came about, the various factions that collided and the many different peoples and natural resources affected by its history is fascinating and instructive with implications for communities throughout the US. Crane builds a narrative that includes the Klallam Natives who continue to claim the land and the resources of the river as their special provenance, nineteenth-century entrepreneurs and progressives who viewed the river as an "organic machine," early environmental movement leaders, factory mill operators and their blue collar employees, and not least of all, the salmon themselves who depend upon the natural flow of the river to maintain their complex spawning cycles. Given that this is an environmental history, it should come as little surprise that Crane stands in support of the river restoration project, but his balanced portrayal of the various parties involved will be illuminating to anyone concerned about the question of hydro-electric dams and their impact on the land. I was surprised to learn just how far back some of these battles go. While entrepreneurial visionaries like Thomas Aldwell typically saw "the wilderness as a barrier to progress" and promoted hydro-electric power as a kind of utopian program to boost economic opportunity across the board, Crane informs us that laws protecting salmon runs were already in place as early as the 1890's. Then as now, however, such laws and concerns were often outmatched by the powerful conglomeration of interests in favor of constructing the dams. Over the decades honest attempts were made by the Corps of Engineers and others to protect the salmon by providing hatcheries, constructing fish ladders, and through other various means. I am old enough to recall how the fish ladders in particular were touted in elementary school classrooms as something of an ingenuous technological compromise, but Crane's research reveals the complexities of such claims and the ultimate failure of these innovations to actually rejuvenate the salmon runs. The story of the Elwha is never a simple one, however, and Crane scrupulously documents the surprising victories, failures and assorted complex alliances that make up such a history. In the end, this book unravels many of the typical stereotypes that would simply pit soulless corporate moguls against nature-worshipping tree-huggers. As Crane notes, "the campaign to remove the Elwha dams incorporated environmental and economic arguments, a creative solution, and determination to build consensus in support of restoration." This is an enjoyable, at times lyrical, and always interesting bit of historical investigation that marries historical rigor with regional interest,narrative momentum and professional passion. Ultimately it asks us to consider what is the meaning of a river and, by extension, how we will proceed in finding a balance between nature and industry and managing the limited resources that sustain us on this planet.

Great For What It Did - Dissapointing For What It Promised

Over the last decade there has been a bit of negligence within the historical community when titling publications. This under-sight often extends to the introductions of books which outline more subject matter than the authors actually intend on investigating. Jeff Crane's Finding the River: An Environmental History of the Elwha unfortunately maintains this unfortunate pattern. Crane has not written an environmental history rather, he has written a socio-economic history of the Elwha and the public policy surrounding the river for the last one hundred years (and quite thoroughly at that). Early on in the book Crane promises to address deep philosophical questions about habitat restoration and cultural continuity as well as how the Elwha story reveals "the role of nature" in our lives. Crane explains, "Many Americans struggle to understand and negotiate the role of nature in their lives. The story of the Elwha River reveals a great deal about this relationship..." Finding the River does not adequately address these questions and assertions.

The Elwha River is located in the northern reaches of Washington State's Olympic Peninsula and flows through Olympic National Park before emptying into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It was the location of two treaty-defying dam projects which transcended decades, were an engineering blunder, and ultimately failed to deliver on their promises to the public and politicians who lobbied for them. After much debate, the decision was made, with federal support, to deconstruct the two technologically obsolete dams. If this were the intended scope of the book, it would be complete and resolved in its mission. However, Crane endeavored to incorporate the more abstract and sometimes scientific themes of environmental history which lead to noticeable imbalances within the book.

To write a complete environmental history of any area, one must provide meaningful ecological and geological insights throughout the text. Crane reserves the first 8-10 pages for such a history covering the 3+ million year story before throwing in Natives and never mentioning the environment again in a meaningful and exploratory way. Of course it is not necessary to include a detailed biotic and geologic record of the Elwha region; however, by treating such a record as a mandatory introduction for an environmental history book and nothing more, he has separated the natural history from the human history. This does not at all maintain his claim that the Elwha can reveal to the readers "the role of nature in their lives." In fact it achieves the contrary.

Crane proceeds to provide excellent insights on the Klallam people who were the last Elwha residents before the white settlers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Crane draws from intriguing primary sources as reported from early explorers as well as a variety of secondary documents to illustrate an organized portrait of pre-contact Puget Sound riparian lifestyle. Crane employs meticulous citation when describing the lifestyle and practices of the Klallam people, but when he concludes the topic he insists that the Klallam people probably valued the river "for its beauty and clean water" and insists that the Klallam worldview was one where "nature was not commodified...While it is anachronistic to portray Indian peoples environmentalists in modern terms (there are many examples of Indian peoples damaging ecosystems and certain species like beaver during the beaver fur trade), in the case of the Klallam, we see a system of use and respect that worked..." Crane offers no citation or example to reinforce this grass roots idea. Instead he moves on to commit one of his most significant blunders in the book.

In order to reinforce his idea of the ecologically mindful Indian, Crane draws from Joseph Taylor's book, Making Salmon. Crane accurately notes Taylor's effort to explain the massive salmon harvest carried out by the Pacific Northwest Indians. These harvests were extensive and supported a large native population. According to Crane, Taylor explained that through ceremonial practices Indians self-regulated themselves into being unconsciously ecologically minded, and therefore they never depleted the salmon runs to their current pathetic state. However, Taylor's intentions behind Making Salmon were more concerned with the causes of the decline and the futile efforts of fish culturists to offset the drooping salmon run statistics. Taylor concludes that natives of the Pacific Northwest harvested an enormous amount salmon (perhaps as much as peek industrial harvests) and that no such ecologically minded constraints existed. Taylor uses a library of statistics to prove that salmon declines are due to, in sum, habitat loss.

In his introduction, Crane promised meaningful environmental philosophy on the subject of the Elwha but ultimately handles the topic by a few John Muir and William Cronon quotes and a few distant associations to the Hetch-Hetchy controversy of the early twentieth century.

However, as mention above, Crane has produced an excellent, and I mean excellent, hundred year account of the Elwha controversy placed in a political, social, and economical background. This was the book's strength, and if the reader is searching that sort of insight, then I highly recommend Finding the River. I would furthermore recommend that the reader skip the introduction and chapter 1 in order to not set up false hope in the promises and assertions posited in the early pages of the book.
