Laura Story is a well known songwriter whose career has skyrocketed in 2011 to the top of the Charts with her blockbuster hit, Blessings. Now one of the most played artists on Christian radio, she and her husband Martin, who recovered from a brain tumor and major surgery a few years ago, live in Atlanta. There she works in music and women s ministry at Perimeter Church (4,000 members).

Laura Story's walk through the scriptures is a blessing

Laura Story's story is one that most girls dream of - marry the star athlete, being a Grammy-award winning singer, songwriter and go on tour and see the world.

But Story doesn't see her 'story' as anything but ordinary made into extra-ordinary thanks to God, and she reflects on this briefly and humbly in her new book, "What if your BLESSINGS come through Raindrops". It is a devotional guide that reads like a journal filled with Story's intimate digging into the scriptures and sharing of special verses and quotes filled with hope, encouragement and blessings.

Formatted to be a month-long guide, with spaces for the reader to write her or his thoughts, Story's devotional guide is more than just a mere inspirating, motivational book that can make a reader feel good. "Blessings," the devotional book, gives the reader a boost up the ladder in his or her seeking to have a more intimate and more purposeful relationship with God, and Story peppers the pages with realistic, thought-provoking, 'Ah, I get it and now I can apply it' lessons.

She told me on the phone, as I am the editor of an online newspaper, [...], that she was just a "girl walking through the scriptures" when she wrote the book.

Encouraging Devotional

My Thoughts:

I love Laura Story's song called "What If Your Blessings Come Through Raindrops". There is so much truth and strong faith woven throughout the words. Every time I hear it, my heart is blessed.

Put that into a book, where Laura shares parts of her own journey with pain, suffering and tears, and you have an incredible encouraging devotional.

Every chapter is simply written in a way that makes you think and inspires your heart to look at life in a different light.

I loved the verses, the thoughts and the prayers that Laura shares for each chapter.

If you are going through any difficulty, change, struggle or trial in your life right now, this book is sure to be a blessing to you.

Remembering that God is working good through all life situations, we can trust that He is in control and we can trust His hand.

Blessings and Raindrops

What If Blessings Come Through Raindrops by Laura Story would make a great book for someone going through a hard time or just to understand their faith better. It has thirty daily devotions. They include discussion and scripture on different topics, sayings from different people, a section called "summing things up", and at the end of each topic "your own thoughts" which can be like a journal. Some of the topics it includes are "When we lose the sense of His nearness", "When we don't understand", and "Finding peace amid the thorns".

The book is based on the song, "What if Blessings Come Through Raindrops". It contains the words of the song. When my husband first introduced me to this song it touched me to the point of tears so when I saw this book I knew I had to read it.

The author has experienced her own amount of suffering when she found out her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The author says, "There is a depth of intimacy with God that can only be known through suffering".

I hope you decide to read this book and receive the blessings from it. I know I have felt blessed by reading the book.

He recounts the history of the development of ideas about strategy and foreign policy during a critical period in American history: the era of the nuclear standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union.

The book looks at how the country's foremost thinkers advanced their ideas during this time of United States expansionism, a period that culminated in the Vietnam War and détente with the Soviets. Beginning with George Kennan after World War II, and concluding with Henry Kissinger and the Vietnam War, Kuklick examines the role of both institutional policymakers such as those at The Rand Corporation and Harvard's Kennedy School, and individual thinkers including Paul Nitze, McGeorge Bundy, and Walt Rostow.

Kuklick contends that the figures having the most influence on American strategy--Kissinger, for example--clearly understood the way politics and the exercise of power affects policymaking. Other brilliant thinkers, on the other hand, often played a minor role, providing, at best, a rationale for policies adopted for political reasons. At a time when the role of the neoconservatives' influence over American foreign policy is a subject of intense debate, this book offers important insight into the function of intellectuals in foreign policymaking.

Kuklick, a University of Pennsylvania American history professor, studies three groups of thinkers (the RAND Corporation; Harvard political scientist Richard Neustadt and Ernest May's "May Group"; and academics who became presidential advisors, including George Kennan, McGeorge Bundy and Henry Kissinger) to understand intellectuals' "thinking about war" and how their ivory-tower-nurtured philosophies meshed with "political reality." Kuklick's deconstruction of the doctrines of massive retaliation, flexible response and gradual escalation will ring familiar to students of the cold war, and he underlines rather than upends the traditional consensus on "philosophers in government." (Kennan is the "first intellectual middleman of the postwar national security studies," and Kissinger is "supremely gifted in translating ideas into politics.") But it is RAND, an Air Force-created think tank, and the reactions to its blend of "mathematical-economic" reasoning, organizational theorizing and "rational choice" decision making that dominate the volume. The book picks up a full head of steam in the Vietnam chapters where RAND analysts like Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg and policymakers get their comeuppance. When intellectuals wage war

Prof. Kuklick has written before about both philosophy and politics in America, and in his latest book, "Blind Oracles", he brings the two together in the most extreme of all political acts, the waging of war. Beginning with the theoretical underpinnings of the ideas about war in the aftermath of WWII, "Blind Oracles" follows the birth and increasing influence of the RAND corporation from the beginnings of the Cold War, through the Cuban Missile Crisis, and up to the Vietnam War, when a new breed of intellectual-adviser, many from Harvard's Kennedy School, came into prominence, attempting to transform their philosophies into policy. Finally, Kuklick ends with the realpolitiking of Kissinger who was "supremely gifted in translating ideas into politics," even if some of those ideas may be considered abuses of American power.

Besides portraying the dangers of attempting policy in the vacuum of the ivory tower or the blinders of rigid ideology, "Blind Oracles" also shows how foreign policy thinking has not changed in its essentials since Clausewitz, whose famous dictum, "War is the continuation of policy (politics) by other means," underlines the motives and decisions of men who tried to conceptualize state-sponsored violence in ways to justify its bloody costs.

A fascinating study of self-delusion

This fascinating book looks at the influence in government of intellectuals such as George Kennan, Paul Nitze, Walt Rostow, Robert McNamara and Henry Kissinger. It also examines their shared myths, for example that US interventionism is necessary, that the USA is uniquely virtuous, and that war only comes from malevolent surprises by others.

Kuklick shows that their basic function was to provide politicians with justifications for doing what they were going to do anyway, to give them cover and act as defense counsel. He judges, "The accepted wisdom of the era fell short of what we might want." Their assessments of Soviet strengths and motives were `simplistic'. "Much of what strategists `knew' was wrongheaded or muddled, if not mistaken."

He notes that these civilian strategists showed an acute distrust of democracy and were committed to `a select management that would lead by exaggeration'. Proximity to power brought arrogance and ignorance.

After the US war against Vietnam, McNamara organised a conference at which he tried to make the Vietnamese participants accept that the war had been due to `mutual misunderstanding'. But Nguyen Thach, a former foreign minister, responded, "I would say, with all due respect to Mr. McNamara, that the U.S. mindset, as he says was incorrect, but that the Vietnamese mindset - our assessment of the U.S. - was essentially correct."

General Nguyen Giap, Vietnam's chief military strategist, said, "I don't believe we misunderstood you ... Excuse me, but we correctly understood you ... you are wrong to call the war a `tragedy' - to say that it came from missed opportunities. Maybe it was a tragedy for you, because yours was a war of aggression, in the neo-colonialist `style', or fashion, of the day for the Americans."

Kuklick concludes, "The men of knowledge did well by their societies, yet their actual knowledge was minimal while their sense of self-regard and scholarly hand-waving was maximal. They did their best work in constructing ways of thinking that absolved leadership of liability, deserved or not. Undoubtedly there was a symbiosis between the defense specialists and the nonintellectual elite that wanted their services in places of power, but the culture paid a pretty penny for the expertise, especially when so many intellectuals disdained a democratic republic."

Only half right

This book examines the role of men who transitioned from academia to politics and had great influence on America's wars and foreing policy. It includes such luminaries as Mcgeorge Bundy, George Kennan and Kissinger. But it also fails to give enough attention to others such as Zvignew Bryzinski and Madeline Albright. Is this because the book is mostly a critique on what it sees as 'republican' intellectuals who influenced 'right wing' administrations. Every administration however relies on academics, partially because foreign policy pashas tend to transition back and forth from politics to business to academics(see for instance Macnamara or Lawrence Summers, Wolfowitz, Elliot Abrams, Condi Rice).

This is how politics works for Republicans and Democcrats and they are not all 'blind oracles' and they are not all ignorant of the reality on the ground. Senior Administration members from other sectors, such as Dick Cheney, have proved equally problematic and un-realistic. In the final analysis George Kennan's prognosis about containment proved correct and Kissinger will be rememmbered for being one of the most influential secretaries of state in the 20th century.

Most Definitive Book on Egos-State Technique

I have been dying for a more how-to, intervention book on working with parts and ego states ever since coming across IFS in 2012. I use ego state work frequently in my psychotherapy practice, but it's what I have gathered from several sources, including my AEDP training which has been integrating parts work into it recently. Also Emotion Focused Therapy, IFS literature and videos, and Coherence Therapy interventions. But I still felt that I was simply figuring this stuff out from fragments without something definitive to assist with the techniques and nuts and bolts of the work. Now I have a superb comprehensive piece of work that will take my parts work to a new level!

I highly recommend this work, as it is surprising the changes that can occur. Great for expanded empty chair work as well.

I am an EMDR therapist who loves this book! It's simple and you can start using these strategies right away! I've read other ego state books and I find most to be terribly time consuming and complicated. This book also captures trauma theory very well!

Great storyline that jumps from the present to the past and does so in a very clear manner. As Roy visits his past life, you are riveted to find out how he will interact with his ex wife, himself and the serial killer who took away his loved one and yet played a role in making Roy a small, but short lived fortune. Most of us would love the opportunity to go back in time and revisit our past. Jon Spoelstra awakens those thoughts as he presents this exciting thriller.

All good tales of Antarctic adventuring, whether fiction or nonfiction, feature a murderously difficult trek across a boundless expanse of frozen icescape. Dickinson's foray into the genre is no exception. Famed British explorer Julian Fitzgerald and Norwegian Carl Norland, his partner, are attempting to walk across Antarctica at its broadest point and have fallen short of the mark by 80 miles. When the plane sent to rescue them crashes, their only hope for salvation is the scientific station Capricorn, some 300 miles away. Capricorn is a drilling base headed by scientist Lauren Burgess, who, along with her four-person team, has made a startling discovery in a fresh water lake that lies 2,000 feet under the ice beneath the base. Lauren rushes off with love-interest Sean and rescues the two explorers, but winter sets in, preventing evacuation, and Fitzgerald is soon revealed to be a black-hearted villain plotting a triumphant return to England as the hero of the expedition-even if he has to kill everyone else in the process. Norland dies in a disastrous fire that destroys the base, forcing the team, hounded by a now insane, ax-wielding, snowmobile-mounted Fitzgerald, to trek back to the site of the original plane crash, where there is a transmitter. Dickinson (The Other Side of Everest) certainly knows his stuff, having personally cheated death on both Everest and the Antarctic ice. Readers unfamiliar with the stories of real Arctic explorers-Shackleton, Scott, Byrd, etc.-will find this a more exciting read than those already acquainted with the fascinating true life stories.

Awesome Antarctic Adventure

Lauren Burgess is fulfilling the dream of a lifetime running Capricorn Base, a scientific research station in the Antarctic interior. Three hundred miles away, an expedition consisting of famous explorer Julian Fitzgerald and his companion, Carl Norland, has run into trouble. The two men would have been the first to cross Antarctica on foot at its widest point if they hadn't run out of supplies and begun starving to death 80 miles from the goal. The rescue plane they summon crashes, so Lauren and one of her four teammates, Sean, ride to the rescue, taking the two explorers and Richard, a journalist who survived the crash, back to Capricorn to wait out the winter. It is soon apparent that Julian Fitzgerald is not the hero the media has made him out to be; rather he is dangerously reckless with resources and lives, and Lauren and Sean believe he kept food supplies to himself while leaving Carl and Richard to starve while awaiting rescue. When he announces his plans to finish his trek, demanding a ride back to the crash site to resume his journey, Lauren refuses, and his behavior really gets out of control. Suffice it to say, the team at Capricorn Base finds themselves on the run with almost no resources, in a race to find rescue in the most inhospitable place on earth.

While the story is intriguing and compelling, there were a few minor weak points. Julian Fitzgerald vacillates between being paranoid and just a spoiled brat in a way that lacks consistency. Also, while I liked the outcome, the ending left me feeling cheated. We had been with these characters through an entire Antarctic winter, suffered every step with them on their arduous journey, felt all their hunger and pain, and in the end, though we know their fate, they fade into the background instead of having the book show us their triumph. The same number of pages in the postscript that focused elsewhere would have been better spent with our team of six hardy heroes, and delivering comeuppance to the villain. That was an event I DESERVED to see after all I vicariously went through at his expense, but it didn't happen.

While it is a black mark against it, the ending does not ruin the book because I did like the outcome, and overall it was very well written. Though it contained the clichéd scene of the good guy being too good to finish the villain when she had the chance, thereby needlessly further endangering her team before belatedly growing the spine needed to try to fix things when it was already too late, it was still nonetheless a very good Antarctic thriller. I don't think I've ever read a book with better descriptions of that continent and its frozen landscape. The heroes were also a likeable lot, and the villain deliciously detestable, as they should be in a good adventure tale. In all, Black Ice is a satisfying page-turner.

An Excellent Read

Some of what others here have written is true, but I quite vehemently disagree with the person who typified the book as "too sexist for belief." That couldn't be more wrong. Lauren, the FEMALE protagonist, is the proverbial Rock that kept the entire station together through any and all amounts of adversity. She was The Leader from beginning to end! Yes, she made one particularly frustrating decision, but not ALL the men are perfect either -- many are weak, shallow and, considering Fitzgerald, the MALE antagonist, much worse.

I found Dickinson's book to be engrossing and quite realistic. He clearly has the Cold Adventure Chops to write about this kind of thing, considering his 1996 venture up Mt. Everest which resulted in his 2000 book "The Other Side Of Everest" -- already well reviewed here at Amazon. In fact, I just ordered his non-fiction book whilst writing this review. And no, I'm not a Dickinson Shill. I simply purchase what pleases me and what looks good.

I'll not be a Plot Spoiler here; simply suffice to say that, if you're looking for a realistic portrayal of Antarctic adventure, this is your book. The book isn't sexist or racist or ageist or iceist or any other kind of "ist" you can imagine.

Someone had an agenda in that review and, for whatever reason, a good read wasn't on it.

Bottom line? You can't beat an excellent adventure like this for $6.99.

Just a HAIR dissatisfying? Fitzgerald's future. On the other hand, one could say that Dickinson took the superior stance and avoided going for the obvious in terms of retribution and revenge.

POLAR PERIL

I've always had this esoteric, quasi-romantic idea that visiting or seeing Antarctica would be a real thrill...but after reading BLACK ICE, those notions are quickly overshadowed by the fierce brutality of the South Pole. Explorer/author Matt Dickinson has created a pretty realistic novel, although it certainly has its share of adventurous implausibilities, but overall a very good read.

The plot focuses on professional explorer Julian Fitzpatrick and his novice comrade, Carl Norlund, who have been attempting to be the first explorers to cross the entire continent of Antarctica, only to fail and need help seriously. When a rescue plane crashes in an attempt to rescue them, a nearby scientific team is called upon to help rescue them. This team is led by Dr. Lauren Burgess, who is about to make a shocking discovery in an underground lake and who doesn't really want to abandon her quest. But humane morality intercedes and she and her crew are off to save them.

Of course, Julian Fitzpatrick is the consummate self-inflated villain who doesn't want the world to know his own dark secrets about the failure, and soon his maniacal acts leaves the science crew to fend for themselves when he blows up their complex.

Dickinson weaves a pretty good tale but I wasn't totally happy with the book's resolution; I would have liked for Julian's exposition to be part of the narrative; although his fate is ironic, it didn't give me a complete feeling of closure.

About the Author
Francis O'Gorman is from English, Irish, and Hungarian families and was educated at the University of Oxford as Organ Scholar of Lady Margaret Hall. He has written or edited twenty books, mostly on English literature, and his many essays discuss literature, mental health, music, and the state of the modern university. His most recent piece of creative non-fiction is a memoir, Forgetfulness (2016). He is a Professor in the School of English at the University of Leeds, UK.

Worriers read on- you have much self-understanding to pleasurably gain

In his introduction to this book Francis O'Gorman describes a number of systematic theoretical approaches to the subject which he refrains from using. Instead he tells us that he is going to grope his way to an understand of a very commonplace and common reality which a great share of humanity lives and suffers with.
As a great worrier myself I appreciate very much the attention he gives, and the insight he has on the subject. Take one thing which has always bothered me. Perhaps it is because I am a traditional religious person. But I am always worried that if I do not worry the thing I do not worry about will happen. O'Gorman explains that this kind of need to worry as a kind of sacrificial payment to prevent the thing worried about from happening is also most commonplace. Worriers worry that if they do not worry they will be punished for not worrying.
Worriers as we all know also waste enormous amounts of time tormenting themselves and others with needless worries. They also often discover problems which others ignore. Worry can also help.
This is a book which I believe will help most readers better understand ourselves.

You are not alone, worrier!

This book is perfect for everyone that worries.

It overs the perfect perspective of how people that are constantly worries always find the "but" in any situation, and showcases that no matter where you are and at what time of history you live in, worrying is always there and present.

This book is interesting and fantastically written, offers a nice view and annectoes and stories about worrying and how -in a way- it connects us all no matter who you are and where you are coming from.

If you are someone that worries -and is there really anyone that doesn't?- read this book. And find funny moments, honest moments, and just an interesting view on what worrying is and how you are just a small part of a big history.
