All around fantastic

:My random thoughts:
When a book starts off with, "Once upon a long long time ago, in a land impossibly far away". It's hard to read that, and not cozy down, knowing you are in for an incredible read.
Everard is one of the strangest, Wittiest, Most unique (Unique doesn't have it's own -est?), and whimsical fantasy novels I've ever read. From Sassy's sweetly sour sarcasm, to the Author's quirky narrating, I was kept in stitches. While reading, it wasn't uncommon for me to snort with laughter, or to huff with Sassy when Everard really was being SUCH a man (if I was a fire breathing reptile, I'd blast smoke through my nostrils too. But I'm not, so I can't).
When my siblings would come up, and ask what I was reading, the best explanation my preoccupied brain could think to say, was, "An awkward prince". Which isn't very bright, but when your mind is in a land impossibly far away, you can say such things like that.
Everard is, indeed, an awkward Prince. He might not be tripping all over his feet, and he might not be spilling mugs each time he turns around, he bumbles all the same. However, while he might be a plain out awkward goose in the beginning, at the end, he is more, adorably awkward. Oh, yeah, without a doubt, Everard turns out simply adorable.

Characters:
Everard was interesting. Rarely in the literary world do you meet a bloke like him. I admired him for his strong sense of duty, it was refreshing, but overwhelming too. At some points, I'll admit, I just wondered why he even tried, but, in the end, everything had turned out for the best. He had learned lessons, and faced his fears. Proved himself, if you will.
Roana I think is a wonderful example for girls and woman of all ages. The way she calmly faced the future, how she tried her best to please everyone, and dealt sweetly with her Father. Yet, wasn't too timid to stand against him when he did wrongs, and was willing to not accept the Prince's offer. That takes some amazing bravery people, to say "No" to a Prince's offer of marriage.

Plot:
The plot was...quick, but also slow at times. There were instances when I just wanted Everard's tasks to end, it seemed a bit monotonous while he was searching for the 'Giant'. But after Bernar's plot was uncovered, it picked back up again.

Writing Style:
I adore Mrs. Havig's writing style, but this book's in particular, is one of my favorites. It was quirky, and hilarious. Each time the Narrator would break off to explain things, I had to smile at the witty way those normal (or not so normal) things were explained.

Ending:
The ending summed things up nicely. It finished well. From Everard becoming 100% adorable and loosing some of that stifling shyness of his, Roana living pretty much happily ever after (her father was convicted of treason, we can't say her life was always happy. Plus, that's a sugary Disney lie. I'm sure even Cinderella had to deal with her Step Mother and sisters again) and even a happy ending for Gilander.

World Building:
The world building demands a "Bravo Brava". World building is certainly a fine point for Mrs. Havig.

Language: None.

Drugs and Drink: Ale and mead was drunk, but it's the Middle Ages. Everyone drank the stuff. There was no drunks, however. So, you can rest easy on that.

Romance and sexual content:
The fact that the hero and heroine of 'Everard' didn't meet, fall head over heels in love, and decide to marry on the spot is a wonderful sight. I'm sure you can understand when I say that the Disney style romance can get annoying. It was a fantasy romance, without any romance. It wasn't about the head over heels love, but the slow and steady love that endures.

Violence:
Violence? Everard goes to slay a dragon, a giant, gets attacked twice (the first time only resulting in a minor head injury, and the second leaving Everard more then half dead) and then Everard had to duel an untrustworthy, to say the least, Knight. Which resulted in having to kill him. But it was never gory. And, I liked how Everard was sensitive enough to One) Make sure Roana didn't see Martel be killed, and Two) he mourned Martel's death. How rare is that? Very rare. But, I've over used the word in this post, refreshing.

Ratings
I loved this read. It was refreshing, fun, and just all around clean. It was simple enough that even a 5 year old would like to hear it read out loud, but entertaining enough to keep this 16 year old engrossed. Also, so few fantasies include Christ. From 'Great Spirits' to Aslan, there is normally a look alike, but never the true thing. 'Everard' did. And I loved it. I never realized how more a Fantasy can be when you include God.

Without a shadow of a doubt, or a shadow of decision, or a shadow of remorse, or a shadow of anything, I give this book a whole, hearty, and applauded 5 star!

Well written and humorous.

Everard is about Prince Everard, who has returned from a 1,000 year war. On the way to the castle, he meets a girl named Roana and he decides to marry her. Standing in his way is her father, who is angry about his son dying in the war. Her father makes the prince go on ridiculous quests to prove himself to the father. This is a fun and humorous book. I would recommend this book to other young readers as well as adults.

While you do not have to read Princess Paisley in order to enjoy this book, I would recommend that you read that book also. There are a few crossover parts that make this book more enjoyable having read Princess Paisley.

An Excellent Fairy Tale Twist

I don't know why I bother myself with worrying about it, but somehow, every time I start a Chautona Havig story, I wonder how it will be as good as the last one I read. Really, you'd think I'd get it in my thick skull that there is no Chautona Havig book that I won't love! For real!
To prove this point, I'll just say Everard is one of my absolute favorites (but truly, aren't they all?!). I love his character, I love Roana, I love Sevrin, I love Giliander, I love Alydia (as an aside, I think all the names are wonderful too!), I even love Sassy. :)
The way Chautona narrates the story is so much fun (as it was with Princess Paisley) and I love how faith is incorporated, and that there are lessons anyone, not just kids, can learn through reading it.
I can't say enough good things about this book. Just buy it already, seriously - you won't regret it.

About the Author
Gennaro Contaldo is widely known as the Italian legend who taught Jamie Oliver all he knows about Italian cooking. Gennaro started working in the kitchens of local restaurants in Amalfi at the age of eight, before moving to Britain in 1969. He worked in village restaurants around the country, and then moved to London where he worked in several restaurants including Carluccio's where he met Jamie Oliver and his own, Passione. These he days his time is divided between writing books, Jamie's Italian chain of restaurants and appearing on TV cookery shows and in magazines.

Delicious simple and authentic

The recipes are clear, the foods are delicious, and the preparation is minimal. I'm told it's remeniscent of Strato Cotugno.

Robin Biesbroek developed Lunar and Interplanetary trajectory design and optimisation software for more than ten year. His software was used by several space agencies around the world, such as NASA GSFC, NASA JPL, NASA Ames, ESA, KARI and DLR, as well as by several large satellite integrator companies such as Airbus, Thales Alenia Space and Orbital Sciences. He now works as a system engineer at the European Space Agency (ESA).

The Way We Were

It is extremely hard to judge this book solely on it's own merits because the shadow of the film, staring Robert Redford and Barbra Streissand, looms so large. What I can say is that readers expecting to find the story depicted in the film will not be disappointed. This is one instance where the filmmakers were very true to the novel, in many cases lifting dialogue verbatim from the book. Having said this, I am afraid most will find that the screenwriters didn't leave much. The book is serviceable and we do learn a bit more about Katie and Hubble and the times in which they lived but what becomes apparent is how much dimension and color the movie actually adds to the story. Granted, Laurents is drawing from his own life and writing about his friends and their experiences but somehow their stories work better when we can see them. Redford and Streissand, as well as the rest of the talented cast, imbue the characters with a depth and implied history that isn't as apparent on the page and the movie story, frankly, feels tighter and more focused. As if the author made one final edit. If the reader is simply interested in seeing how the story depicted in the film developed, the book is interesting but compared to the film itself, there is no contest. The best way to experience Arthur Laurents' story is to watch the film by the same name.

An interesting book

for the reader because of what it's about: (1) A woman who loves a man & changes herself because of her love for him, only to find that he can't change despite his love for her; (2) set in Hollywood before & after HUAC & the blacklists. It's interesting for a writer or scholar, too, because it shows how a master playwright & screenwriter adapts to the novel. But Laurents DOESN'T adapt to the form, and I think I know why. He depends on others (actors, directors) to make his plays & screenplays engaging & entertaining; but in a novel, he has to do these himself. He hints that he can't when he mentions rewrites of his chief character's second novel, and the defects he finds in it are those of the book he's writing! Also, Laurents's customary method for constructing plot--mixing & matching from a menu--works well for plays & movies where the writer is the maker of plots, but not in the novel, where manners are more important than actions & motives are more important than manners. Laurents writes a novel like a screenplay, episode by episode, a technique that works for F. Scott Fitzgerald & Terry Southern, because they confine themselves to the superficial & don't seek to explain manners or motives. Laurents tries to explain, and the result is clinical. What we have here is Scott & Zelda transported to the Forties through Sixties, with Laurents fleshing out characters with people he has known or heard about. The result is interesting, not engaging. Still, a good read on a summer's day, if you can get Barbra Streisand out of your ear.

Real good place to start reading Lung and real good book

This is a very accessible work and a good book on which to start reading Dr. Lung. He gives the history more room for practacilities, which I liked alot. There are many people writing books about not trusting people too quickly in these days--and Lung is right on top with specific things that can and most likely will happen to you at some point in your lifetime. I only wish something like this type of information had been available when I was in my '20's. It's totally opposite any stupidity any therapist ever toldl me and right on the mark.

An excellent volume for anyone who is into the deeper philosophical aspects of the "way of the warrior."

I have been a life time student of numerous martial art systems (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Kenjutsu etc.) having earned black belt ranks in many of them. Besides the obvious physical and weapon skills I have also studied the Asian philosophical aspects of the warrior arts.

When I saw this book (Mind-Sword: Mastering the Asian Darks Arts of mind manipulation by Dr. HaHa Lung) on Amazon I immediately purchased it at a bargain price. This 201 page text is filled with valuable insights and advice on how to live the way of the warrior. The author boldly tells it like it is when it comes to living the way of the warrior. His advice is sometimes harsh but realistic. This highly informative book is organized into five parts:

Part one focuses on “Musashi: The man and the myth.” It provides details of his experiences and the lessons learned from them. The second part covers Musashi: the method and explains the thinking process used by Musashi. The third part expounds upon the 9 secrets of the Samurai. The fourth part explains the “Modern-Day Musashi” and how it applied to modern times. The final part reveals “108 secrets of the Samurai.” The conclusion tells how “A good sword cuts both ways.” There is also a helpful glossary. This is the kind of book that needs to be studied and not just read to fully appreciate its contents.

This is the kind of book that has so much information it is difficult to absorb all the details it reveals; nevertheless, if you are a serious martial artist and follow the warrior philosophy you need to check out this volume.

Full of very rich anecdotes and some real insights. Musashi!

I have avoided these "Dark Ninja Arts" books for years, partially out of a kind of loyalty to the Bujinkan lineage of Ninjutsu I once trained in, and partially because they looked kind of corny. However, browsing through the martial arts section at Barnes and Noble's one evening, I pulled this book off the shelf, read the back cover, and, instead of some hyperbolic blurb that seemed like it was shaped to appeal to the Spike TV (and lower) audience, the words "Miyamoto Musashi", jumped out at me. Musashi, who killed men in over 60 duels before he was the age of thirty (starting by beating a grown master swordsman to death when he was 13 with a bokken). I skimmed through the text, and was happy to find that it was largely structured around insights the author had gleaned from Musashi's life and philosophy, primarily from his "Book of Five Rings". I also was happy to find insights from Yagyu Munenori's "The Life-Giving Sword", and other classics of war and strategy, such as Sun Tzu's "The Art of War", and Macchiavelli's "The Prince." In general, it was fairly well-researched (and I have been reading texts on Musashi for years), but the author(s?) cultivate a voice that is dark but playful and humorous that makes the reading enjoyable. Full of very rich anecdotes and some real insights.

However, the grade three reading level and large print puts these time-honored adventures within reach of children wanting background related to the latest screen version long before they can manage Howard Pyle or Sir Thomas Malory's editions. The simple vocabulary retains the spirit of the courtly heroics and the colorful pomp of the medieval circumstances. There are many better renditions than this!

This is an overly simplistic and poorly written introduction to the Arthur legend. If there weren't many better presentations of these tales for young readers, there might be an excuse for such a substandard rendering. Unless you want your kids to think that writing sentence fragments is preferable to constructing clear complex sentences, you might want to stay away from the entire "Bullseye Step Into Classic" series.

Awful writing, terrible grammar, bad for children

In addition to the ham-handed telling of the story, the writing in these Bullseye books is just terrible. Half-sentences. Written like this. Or this. Part of the value of such books is that young readers will learn to read "chapter books." But the English and grammar in these books is so abysmal as to render them useless for this task. I was very disappointed.

Textbook example of how NOT to write sentences

It is hard to believe a book this poorly written could make past the editors! There were so many run-on and incomplete sentences I had trouble reading it to my daughter. I can only imagine what my second grade daughter went through reading on her own. We will keep this book if only to serve as an example of how NOT to construct sentences. There is a year's worth of grammar exercises in this book.
