Things go south...

A solid second book in the Devan Chronicles sees the political conflict and war spread, as the cast of characters and governments of interest grow. Julia is still at the heart of the story, but much of the action occurs elsewhere, as we begin to see major characters in most of the powerful lands become involved with the brewing war. The emphasis here shifts from the uses of magic to the use of power. Beneath all of this are lingering questions: which ruler will actually take care of his or her people, and how can any of this end peacefully?

There are ups and downs, and we see more of the antagonists AND protagonists. The story is richer and far more interesting than the first novel in the series, and I hope that the next in the series is on par with this entry.

The Power that Binds Devan Chornicals

If you like multiple plots and keeping track of about 25 to 30 characters, some who use 2 different names then this is for you. Mark E. Copper waves the story along with about 5 separate plots coming together and going apart to hopefully come all together in the next book. I have had to slow down my reading to keep track of everyone but it is a well written story and I am hooked.

About the Author

Nina Beaman

Ed.D., MSN, CNE (NLN), RN-BC (PMH), RNC-AWHC, CMA (AAMA) Nina Beaman has been a Certified Medical Assistant since 1994 and has participated actively on the local, state, and national levels of the American Association of Medical Assistants. She is also a triple-certified Registered Nurse with certifications in Nursing Education, Psychiatric/Mental Health and Ambulatory Women’s Health. She completed her doctoral dissertation on "Using Disaster Simulation to Promote Volunteerism in Medical Assisting Students." Dr. Beaman teaches at Aspen University and Independence University. Nina owns a Consulting firm, Positive Transitions, where she provides crisis intervention, education, curriculum development, continuing education review, and violence prevention training. A popular speaker and author, she writes on her farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. In her spare time, she works as a forensic nurse consultant and disaster expert.

Janet R. Sesser, a Registered Medical Assistant with American Medical Technologists, holds a Master of Science in Health Education and Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management. Her background includes many years working as a practicing medical assistant for various types of practices and as a cardiopulmonary technician. For the past 25 years, she has worked in postsecondary education teaching and writing allied health curricula. Sesser is very involved with American Medical Technologists, serving as an elected member of the AMT Board of Directors. She is a recipient of the Medallion of Merit Award, the highest honor bestowed by AMT to a medical assistant, and she is a frequent presenter at national medical conferences.

Ron Maly currently holds certifications as a RMA (AMT) and CPhT (PTCB). He obtained his B.S. degree in Biology, Natural Science and Pre-Med with a minor in Chemistry from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska in 1989. In 1991 he received his M.A. degree (with thesis) in Biology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The abstract from his thesis has been nationally published. In 1992 Ron was employed with Harris Laboratories (currently Celerion) in Lincoln, NE as a Chemist and later as a Validation Scientist. In his seven years with Harris Laboratories, Ron had numerous scientific papers on LC/MS/MS pharmaceutical-based research presented at national conferences. In 1999 Ron began working as a medical assistant/histotechnologist for a Moh’s micrographic surgeon in Omaha, NE. During this time he also began working part-time as a pharmacy technician. From 2005 to present, Ron has taught at the college level as a Pharmacy Technician Program Coordinator for Hamilton College/Kaplan University, Council Bluffs, IA; Medical Assisting Program Coordinator and Medical Billing and Coding Coordinator at the Omaha School of Massage and Healthcare of Herzing University, Omaha, NE and is currently the Medical Assisting Program Coordinator and Interim Pharmacy Technician Program Coordinator for National American University, Bellevue, NE.

Great for MA certification exam prep!

My school provides us the e-book for this textbook. Since I'll be using it throughout my entire MA program, I decided to order the hard copy. Fast deliver, great condition for a used book. I have had no problem comprehending the text. It is sorted out nicely, and addresses all the areas that will be on the national certification exam. I would love it were spiral-bound because it is THICK, but I think it is a great textbook for students who are wanting to be become CMAs.

About the Author
Born in Surrey, England in 1908 into a poor family in which there were nine children, John Creasey grew up to be a true master story teller and international sensation. His more than 600 crime, mystery and thriller titles have now sold 80 million copies in 25 languages. These include many popular series such as Gideon of Scotland Yard, The Toff, Dr Palfrey and The Baron. Creasy wrote under many pseudonyms, explaining that booksellers had complained he totally dominated the 'C' section in stores. They included: Gordon Ashe, Michael Halliday, J J Marric,, Anthony Morton and Jeremy York. Never one to sit still, Creasey had a strong social conscience, and stood for Parliament several times, along with founding the One Party Alliance which promoted the idea of government by a coalition of the best minds from across the political spectrum. He also founded the British Crime Writers' Association, which to this day celebrates outstanding crime writing. The Mystery Writers of America bestowed upon him the Edgar Award for best novel and then in 1969 the ultimate Grand Master Award. John Creasey's stories are as compelling today as ever.

The Pitfalls of Idealism

Greene's The Quiet American is powerful and moving and anyone who desires to better understand the mindset of American policymakers at the outset of the United States' deepened involvement in Indochina. Greene writes with the candor and insight of a seasoned overseas correspondant and shows the ideals and idealism that propelled Vietnamese and American interests to tragically clash. Greene portrays the characters in the novel in a manner in which they are complex and very real and not soundbytes and stereotypes that confront us in other books and in the current news media.
A valuable bonus of the Viking Critical Library edition are the essays at the end of the book that provide additional detail to Greene's story. In addition to reviews of the book in the context of US diplomacy, espionage and counterinsurgency, of particular worth is the brief history of American military involvement in the late 1950s/early 1960s in Indochina by Frank Futrell, former Historian of the Air Force. Futrell is knowledgeable and a prolific yet very readable writer, and his 14-page essay at the end of the book serves as a stark epilogue to the novel.

Indispensible, complete treatment of Greene's Indochina

The Viking Critical Library's version of Graham Greene's "The Quiet American" is an indispensible text for full appreciation of Greene's perceptions of Indochina, France's war there, and America's budding involvement. The editor, John C. Pratt carefully selects criticism of Greene's TQA that creates a complete and rich discourse on Greene's life and writings that serves as a backdrop to his novel. Added to that backdrop are histories, such as Frank Futrell's thirteen-page explanation of how the United States became involved in Vietnam, and official documents from the State Department, to interviews with former South Vietnamese generals and Ho Chi Minh.
TQA itself a wonderful book that,to an American, probes at our treasured notion high-minded idealism and our "can-do" spirit that has served us well at times and not so well at others. Greene's symbolism is telling and insightful, given that it was published well before the United States' full-blown involvement in that region of the world. While Greene relates many things that he experienced or felt in Indochina as a journalist, the book is not solely a "war novel". TQA, like many of Greene's books, takes the readers on the author's journey of personal morality and matters religious.
