Selling a Message

I purchased this book to read in preparation for my CSET (California Subject Examination for Teachers) test in Social Science. It covers the standards required, but I find it lacking in many other respects. This book reads like a list of facts interjected with how cultural blending and how "such interaction has resulted in the mixing of different cultures in new and exciting ways".

Now let me preface my next statement by saying that cultural understanding, appreciation and tolerance are vital to a healthy country and people. I find world cultures fascinating, or I would not be in the field that I wish to teach in. But this book is so busy beating you over the head with the fact that you should like cultural blending (it says this phrase at least once a page for well over 1000 pages) that it sort of loses the series of events in a fog of social messages.

Cultural blending is something that happens all the time in this world, and often results out of conquest, migrations, trade, and pursuit of religious freedom - as the book points out. However, I feel they sometimes make stretches to drive their point home to the point of losing other themes of intolerance, domination and genocide (which is certainly not limited to WWII). It only gives passing mention to the butchering of people for their beliefs on a massive scale as Protestants and Catholics vied for power politically. It talks about the Shi'a Muslim Safavids and the Sunni Ottoman Turks butchering each other for their rivaling religious views but does not talk about how that may somehow have consequences in today's rift between the two groups. I'm not sure! This book is too busy telling me that the next ruler exported carpets and bought Chinese tiles and how that is cultural blending - not the consequences of 40,000 killed.

There are only shallow analyses in this book. The "consequences" or "legacies" that are so important are only addressed in the conclusions of a few units.

The chapters are organized in a thematic fashion, so it will jump continents and cultures every other unit from England to India to Africa. It also jumps around with the dates a lot as it is *not* chronological. I found it helpful when studying to make my own time lines to get a decent perspective on how things fit together.

In the second half the book, however it seems to take a completely different tone. Beginning with the Age of Exploration, the preachy quality of it dwindles and it focuses on what happened and why. Of course, European power struggles of the 1500-1700's don't really allow digression because of their convoluted nature!

So, did it serve my purpose? In some ways, yes. I will do well on my exam given that this material correlates with the standards on the test. However I would say this coverage is minimal, and if you are a high schooler reading this, this is NOT the book that will tell you whether you like history or not. This is strictly a list of facts to be regurgitated on a test with some values of tolerance sprinkled in.

Bought this for my son so that he would not have to lug all of the heavy books used in the classroom. He now has one to keep at home and the school copy stays at school. Totally worth the investment

A nice reference book

The book is very informative with some very interesting details. It's also well illustrated and easy to read, which is a quality most history books don't have. Definitely worth the price and good to have around especially if your kids like peeking into books.

A strong, sweet and caring hero

Sometimes it can be hard for a shorter-length book to feel complete with romance, but I think this book delivered that and in a very sweet, sexy and tender way.

This hero has so much going for him: lumberjack, gentle giant, grizzly-shifter, but best of all was his true, tender heart. Such a protector. I just wanted to hug him hard. He's so sweet and sexy, and there was this almost innocent vibe to him as well. He'd blush, would be unsure of his words, kind of socially awkward, but eager to be and to do whatever this heroine needed or wanted from him. He knew exactly what to do in the bedroom, though. Their mating was hot to read. A sexy hero is even sexier when he's so into his heroine and wants only to make her happy.

I really liked the heroine as well. She's sweet, wants to be touched and loved, but is wounded in so many ways, beaten down, and in a situation she hates. She can't believe how the hero respects and cares for her; she's just not used to that from a man. She's more used to being bruised and abused. It was rewarding to see her thrive in love and reclaim what had been taken from her. Also, I loved what her were-creature turned out to be. I was very curious about that!

Never read this author before, and I don't know how I missed her PNR books. I enjoyed meeting this little enclave of were-bears in their trailer park on the mountain. Big, sexy lumberjack bears. How good is that? Soft, sweet and sexy, one of those romances where you think, This is a good man and a good woman, and they deserve to be happy together.

Nice change of pace

It was nice to see a shifter book where the main character wasn't a strong and perfect shifter. While he was physically strong he had issues you don't normally see in a shifter book. I've greatly enjoyed this author's books. Keep up the good work!

Wow!! I loved this book, which is even better than book one. Each book in the series features a member of the crew of werebear lumberjacks who clear beetle killed forest, and each has it's own HEA. Joyce does an amazing job of bringing her stories to life with world building and character development. There is passion, suspense and an emotional connection. Additionally, she keeps the price affordable. I have this book on my reread and recommend lists and will be watching for the next book in the series. (P.S. If you like T.S.Joyce, you may also like Heather Long's PNR).

Kellen is second to the new alpha of the Ash Crew of werebear grizzly lumberhacks. He is in town buying groceries for the crew when he meets a woman at the checkout. Kellen is outraged by the outward signs of physical and mental abuse and kidnaps her, taking her back to camp. Skyler ultimately agrees to spending one night, but Kellen's alpha recognizes who she is and the potential for war with her people, calling Kellen out on his actions. Kellen refuses to return her back to the abusive relationship, however, a relationship promoted and condoned by her family. Because he is determined to protect her until she is strong enough to stand up for herself. And Skyler soon agrees, but knows Roger, her intended mate, won't give up his claim on her, in spite of her decision or status with the werebear crew.

Excellent resource for specific labor market analysis topics

I am a labor economist working with huge amounts of data building complex time series analysis models. One of the more vexing problems to solve is dealing with exogenous impacts on labor market trends. With the change of administration (Obama 2009) there will be significant monetary policy interventions that will have a large impact on the labor market. The Heckman & Robb chapters on evaluating the impact of interventions is an excellent treatment complete enough from me to build from. For that section alone I would give the book a 5.

About the Author

Loren Ford earned his master’s degree in psychology from California State University, Long Beach in 1974 and did additional graduate work in the 1980s at the Oregon Graduate School for Professional Psychology. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Oregon with a private practice. In the past 30 years he has worked at several mental health facilities doing therapy with adolescents and families. From 1977 to 2011 he was on the faculty at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Oregon, teaching courses on personal development, human relations, college success, life-span human development, human sexuality, introduction to counselling, and history.

Judith Arter has degrees in mathematics (B.S., University of California, San Diego,1971), and special education (Masters and Ph.D., University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, 1975 and 1976). After two years working in the research department of Phoenix Unified High School District, she spent 33 years (at Education Northwest and the Assessment Training Institute in Portland, Oregon) researching and training educators at all levels and in several countries on student assessment, focusing especially on using student assessment as an instructional methodology (formative assessment). She is the co-author of numerous publications and books including Classroom Assessment for Student Learning: Doing It Right and Using It Well, 2e (Pearson, in press), and Creating and Recognizing Quality Rubrics (Pearson, 2006).

It's okay... the book is somewhat repetitive of other classes. I would recommend this book for a beginning course. Not for one who's already had previous psychology classes.

LOVE THIS BOOK

I was curious about how this book would be in a classroom setting. Sometimes i cant put it down, and i really enjoy reading it. The author has a humorous personality and it comes out in the text. Anyone interested in learning about human relations in others or themselves should read this book. its not long, nor does it have random tangents. Great book to refer back to in writing papers for other class, and to just have on a bookshelf.

Great gift for an outdoorsman

I gave this to my best friend for Christmas. He said, "This Lost Arts book you got is fantastic. It's a little archaic, but most of my favorite gear is from the time it was written, as well as my favorite techniques, so it works. And the writing is really fun old formal script". He's pretty picky about books and not one to describe things as fantastic or fun very often so it must be pretty amazing. He's 34 and fairly old school when it comes to most everything outdoor related so it worked. I don't think someone who is looking for new/improved/latest & greatest would glean much.

Just an FYI - Some of the hunting techniques (ie, some types of trapping) and chemicals (because they can be used for bombs) referenced in the book are now illegal and some of the equipment is not readily available.

Dr. Bailes served with Science of Mind founder Ernest Holmes as Assistant Dean of the Science of Mind Institute in Los Angeles. He also headed the largest Science of Mind church of its day. In addition, Dr. Bailes was an accomplished metaphysical healer, having healed himself of a so-called incurable disease, using the very technique Treatment that he explains in these Lessons. The Science of Mind philosophy, says Dr. Frederick Bailes, is not a few psychological tricks; it is a life to be lived.

This book is one to read and study over a 12 week period as the author suggests. It contains 12 lessons in learning how to manifest things in one's life while becoming the person you want to be. A mind-blowing book!

A good basic Science of Mind text

Bailes was an early Church of Religious Science minister. This book is a well-written explanation of Science of Mind ideas, less a "tome" than Ernest Holmes "Science of Mind", which was the foundation work for lectures and meetings from which the church more or less evolved. Although Science of Mind writers tend more to argue for their ideas than to really "evangelize a faith", this work has the slightest flavor of an evangelical work. The reader should not worry that it is off-putting, however. It is readable and its ideas are easy to access. If you wish to understand new thought ideas and an argument for their practical application, this is a good place to start. You may not be a convert (I am not), but you can find a good bit to understand what these Californians were doing, and how it links up with the entire new thought movement.

Well written and fairly easy to grasp. Dr. Frederick Bailes covers this in bite size steps and the short quiz at the end of each chapter clarifies - if you don't quite understand all that he has written.

Highly recommended for students of Metaphysics!
