"Most truly great literature ends in tragedy" - High school English teacher's response to her students' desperate pleas for "happier" reading.
Horse Whisperer is a great book that comes really close to being great literature. Nicholas Evans creates memorable characters that we really respond to, and tells a story that we really care about. He falls short, however, by shifting the focus of the story from Grace and Pilgrim to Tom and Annie. Any perceptive reader will easily accept the bond that develops beween them, but bringing their relationship to the fore takes something away from the big picture.
The graphic sexual passages seem oddly out of place in an otherwise flowing narrative, and ultimately threaten to reduce the book to "romance novel" status, not a bad thing in and of itself, but not (one would hope) what the author intended.
Readers disappointed in the book's ending should consult Tolstoy (Anna Karenina), Flaubert (Madame Bovary), Edith Wharton (Ethan Frome) and dozens of others for comparison. The movie makes realistic adjustments to the plot (perhaps even improvements), without pandering entirely to our need for a Hollywood happy ending. Highly recommended.

Empty rhetoric

Many years ago, in the land of the B and D trains, a now-deceased, but then very much alive and cogent rabbi told me: you can either be a rabbi or a marriage counselor. But the roles are entirely different, the agendas are different, and the goals are different.

If you try to be both, you succeed at neither.
This book proves him right. It is a collection of "for Torah people" bits of advice on family life that have as much relevance to the problems that couples endure as the periodic table has to a chart of vitamins. It presupposes that everyone is just perfect (but slightly misunderstood); it relies on homilies rather than truths, and defies the truth of modern (or even middle-age) life.

For the pious (man), you're better off reading some Talmud and then going home and just apologizing; for the pious woman - he's not going to change, just get used to it.

The ONE BOOK you need to read!!

I have read self help books, big fan of audible - read most things out there on peace of mind, happiness - both in the religious (Judaica) - other religious and secular world - THIS IS THE ONE!!!! This book presents a formula for basic success in life and Peace of Mind that is so basic, and so transformative that there is pretty much no way it can't change your life for the positive - who can be happy if they don't have peace of mind - we all wait for reality in life to get to a point where Peace of Mind happens - this book shows you how to achieve peace of mind and let that fuel your happiness and entire perspective on what you want out of life. The author is working on a generic book for anyone (singles, etc.) but despite the title related to marriage I can assure you this book is far reaching and deals very focused on once you have built in peace of mind and self control, happiness and compassion and gracefulness follow - and marriage and ALL of your relationships improve dramatically. Don't know of a more important book you could find - If there were extra stars I would give it at least 10/5.

Shockingly valuable and far reaching

The observations and guidance that Mr. Ostrov has identified in his book, reach far wider than marriage. He is humble about his knowledge, and is thus much more trustworthy than the usual sales pitch. He gives real tools, instead of using his book as a springboard for selling other items and office visits. His tools start working immediately, and are deeply insightful. I love how he gives his references, and explains the ancient thoughts behind his observations. He also is very open to marrying modern psychology with ancient jewish philosophical observations tested over eons. While this book comes from deep inside the orthodox jewish community, the knowledge and insights could be valuable to so many. (As my friend said, when I mentioned that I wanted to send the book to someone else: "Are you trying to acheive world peace by getting his book out?!" My friend and I were both astonished at how he "hit the nail on the head", then gives specific management instructions. After 15 years of seeking professional guidance through several relations, I believe I have found a profesional with the guidance of thousands of years and repeated testing and observations behind him, and the humility and clarity to write a truly helpful book. One example: Everyone says that being happy is a choice, and that you just have to "think positive". All of us who have tried and failed, know that that simplicity is nonsense. And he agrees. He teaches how to filter. This is the REAL "The Secret".

Why you don't want to read this book

Spoiler alert: this is a no-star story. If fidelity is important to you, you'll hate this book--I envy the readers who stopped before finishing it. He claims to love her, seems to understand her, and then shames her with other women at their wedding celebration in a most insulting way. She disappears for the rest of the day and he doesn't bother to go looking for her. When she leaves her room and stumbles upon him later that night, oh, boo-hoo, he's been crying. He apologizes, admits he was this close to cheating on her with one of the sluts at the wedding, and says it's because he's broken inside due to the death of his first wife--and she forgives him. Just like that. Disgusting. And this is at 94% of the book--Regan ruined the story at the very end! She's on my "don't read" list because I don't need that kind of suffering in the books I read to escape.

Well to start I love romance, especially this time period. I did not like the hero. He was an jerk. I found nothing to like about him. I was really upset she let him off the hook so easily, not very realistic. I was very disappointed. Don't know if I will try to read any more of this author's book.

Will the marriage last

Clara Boyle was a widow on her wedding night.Her father decides to marry her off to Lord Eliot.He had. Been married and his wife died. He is now a well known rake.She was injured and has to remain at his home and they agree to marry. He had not been near her up to the day before the wedding . He takes her to a chapel on the estate and they marry without any family or guests. They have a wedding night at the chapel and return home the next day. He ignored Clara and spent time with old women friends. I did not feel they would ever have a lasting marriage. He had told her he loved her before marriage and after yet acted the way he did. I could not understand her forgiveness. I agree with another reviewer we knew nothing of his feelings. We might could have understand him better everything was how she felt. I did not have a good feeling after reading this book everything seemed to be just sexual between them

WATTS’ FINAL BOOK – A “SUMMING UP” OF MANY OF HIS INTERPRETATIONS OF EASTERN IDEAS

Alan Wilson Watts (1915-1973) was a British-born philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as a populariser of Eastern philosophy. He and his then-wife left England for America in 1938 on the eve of WWII, and he became an Episcopal priest---but he left the priesthood in 1950 and moved to California, where he became a cult figure in the Beat movement of the 1950s and later. He wrote many popular books, such as The Spirit of Zen, The Way of Zen, Nature, Man and Woman, This Is It, Psychotherapy East & West, Beyond Theology, The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are, Does It Matter?, Cloud-Hidden, Whereabouts Unknown, and his autobiography, In My Own Way.

He wrote in the Preface to this posthumously-published book, "Certain Chinese philosophers ... explained ideas and a way of life that have come to be known as Taoism---the way of man's cooperation with the course or trend of the natural world... my real interest is in what these far-off echoes of philosophy mean to me and to our own historical situation... Having done as well as we can to record the past we must go on to make use of it in our present context, and this is my main interest in writing this book. I want to interpret and clarify the principles of such writings... in the terms and ideas of our own day... I am obviously more interested in the Spirit---the actual experiencing and feeling of that attitude to life which is the following of the Tao."

He notes that "The yin-yang view of the world is serenely cyclic. Fortune and misfortune, life and death, whether on small scale or vast, come and go everlastingly without beginning or end, and the whole system is protected from monotony by the fact that, in just the same way, remembering alternates with forgetting." (Pg. 31) He cites the Buddhist Fa-Tsang school, which "expounded the mutual interpenetration and interdependence of everything happening in the universe. Pick up a blade of grass and all the worlds come with it. In other words, the whole cosmos is implicit in every member of it, and every point in it may be regarded as its center. This is the bare and basic principle of the organic view." (Pg. 35)

Later, he states, "Because of the mutual interdependence of all beings, they will harmonize if left alone and not forced into conformity with some arbitrary, artificial, and abstract notion of order, and this harmony will emerge tzu-jan, of itself, without external compulsion. NO organization... is organic. Organizations... are based on the following of linear rules and laws imposed from above... which can never grasp the complexity of nature, although nature is only 'complex' in relation to the impossible task of translating it into these linear signs." (Pg. 44)

He observes, "Li may therefore be understood as organic order, as distinct from mechanical or legal order, both of which go by the book. Li is the asymmetrical, nonrepetitive, and unregimented order which we find in the patterns of moving water, the forms of trees and clouds, of frost crystals on the window, or the scattering of pebbles on beach sand." (Pg. 46)

The introductory and closing material by Al Chung-liang Huang is both illuminating, and---to many of us at the time it was published---somewhat shocking, as we read statements such as: "I suddenly remembered one morning at a Chicago seminar. Alan was unusually tired and feeling slightly inebriated when one super-intellectual-bigger-than-life question was put to him... a couple of us... knew for certain that Alan had simply decided to take a short catnap, while everyone else expected... that he was deep in meditation... When he finally came to and realized he had totally forgotten the question, he managed with great finesse and eloquence to come up with an even-more-super-intellectual... answer to dazzle us all." (Pg. xiii) "Alan was able to... create for himself and others a curious kind of balance which somehow sustained him. In later life, he depended more on his external need to perform and to receive support from his audience. Constantly pulled by outside demands, he was too successful to stop---and too brilliant to submit to his own nature... He revealed the crux of this tragedy ... by admitting, 'But I don't like myself when I am sober,' as he surrendered to another shot of vodka at a time when he knew he need not and should not rely on it any more." (Pg. 125) "The few times I remember his being affectionate and embraceable were usually after we had been dancing. And in order to dance as easily and joyously as we did, a few loosening-up drinks were often necessary." (Pg. 126)
